| Everyone has feelings of anxiety at one time or another - your home security system alarm goes off, you are driving at night in an unfamiliar area, your child roams away from you in a store. When the situation ends your anxiety ends. There are other types of anxiety that can make you feel out of control when it doesn't go away. It is important to recognize your symptoms when fear and panic take over and don't seem to go away. Generalized anxiety disorder has symptoms of irritability, shortness of breath, trembling and a fast heartbeat. Fear of the situation is completely out of proportion or is ongoing. Panic disorder has symptoms of suddenly feeling like you are choking, dizzy or your heart is racing. This can last from five to thirty minutes and if not treated, may lead to a phobia. Phobias are anything that provoke unreasonable fear. People can have phobias to many different situations, activities, things or people. When it traps you from living a normal life it is considered a great risk. Try to take control of your anxious feelings. Think about what you can do to overcome your fears. Try exercising and relaxation techniques. Talk to your doctor and work with him/her to create a specific plan that may include medication and/or counseling. It is important to do something rather than ignoring the anxiety. |
